Thirty years ago, some of rural America’s most underserved and distressed communities gained an economic development partner when visionaries such as Bill Clinton, Rob Walton, Mack McLarty, the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation and others formed the Southern Development Bank Corporation, today known as Southern Bancorp.
Southern Bancorp, Inc., along with its development partners – Southern Bancorp Bank and Southern Bancorp Community Partners, has grown to become one of the largest Community Development Financial Institutions or CDFIs in the United States.
Southern’s focus is on growing its impact and influence through responsive, responsible, and innovative product delivery to the un/underbanked, as well as developing strategic partnerships that help broaden its impact far beyond its physical market.

In a nod to one of Southern Bancorp’s founders – Walter Smiley, the founder of Systematics, Inc. (now known as FIS) – Southern’s innovation division is named TeamWALT (Wealth Accumulation and Lifestyle Tech). Led by Walter’s son and Southern Bancorp’s Chief Innovation Officer, Vance Smiley, TeamWALT is an innovation division free to focus on new and creative solutions to challenging financial problems – all through Southern’s mission-oriented lens.
Nimble four-person development teams known as ModSquads tackle specific problems facing those largely ignored by the traditional financial system and develop rapid prototypes and focused app solutions to meet those needs.
